“As an athlete I’ve found aside from hard work, the greatest tools for success are optimism and gratitude.
These practices have led to happiness and the routine pause to realize I’m living the life I love and dreamed of.”
Welcome to my website. I have been running since I was 11 years old and have learned over the years that there is no greater influence on success than the power of optimism. When we are positive, we master our physical potential. The power of our own thinking can open doors and elevate our performances. With optimism I have been able to pursue every goal, win medals, earn American and world records, but more importantly, I’ve been able to be resilient in the face of injury and falling short. Optimists are dreamers, believers and solution seekers. I believe that these lessons are universal and not running exclusive.
I’m writing a lot these days. In fact, the past three years I’ve collaborated with my friend and writer Michelle Hamilton to create an instructional memoir highlighting the power of positivity on performance. I attribute positivity for the success of my long career as a distance runner. Training and racing take enormous physical effort, but the most rigorous and profound effects come from mental training. In order to get the best out of yourself physically, you must be peaking mentally also. Our thoughts become our actions and those acts create our habits. It is critical to shape your thinking in a way that serves, as opposed to hinders, your goal.
The positive mental training that runs along-side mile repeats, tempo runs and long runs have created an optimistic approach in everything I do. Whether I am running, parenting, providing expert commentary for marathon television coverage, motivational speaking at corporate events, or hosting running escapes in my hometown of Mammoth Lakes, California, being positive in my approach has allowed me to find success in everything that gets my attention. Sometimes I wish there were more hours in the day or more days in the week to fulfil all I enjoy doing, but the most important acknowledgement is that my days are filled with joy. I love to run, cook & entertain, read to Piper, walk our mastiffs on trails, and inspire others by sharing the secrets of a positive mind.
My instructional memoir on the power of positivity in performance is due for release in the spring of 2018. It is my greatest hope that it inspires you to create a mindset for success. The result is faster, more enjoyable miles. In the meantime, construct your thoughts to believe all you desire is possible. Re-route your thought and perspective so you can be more productive and successful. The effects of shaping your mindset to be more positive will influence your entire life, allowing you to be a better athlete, businessman, parent or community member.
"My greatest wish besides inspiring a child to dream loftily in sport is to help in the appreciation of the journey;
to instill in many the desire for fitness and health because of the vitality it brings."
